gig fits #5
in May i went to more shows than i can keep track of and i kept thinking i would write about them but i never did. Touching Ice, James K, Jeanne River, Starling, Grace Ives, the Trinity Ace show at 130am, the Poor Image show that i left immediately after the set to go to a house show that was just a house party. i feel like i measure time by shows sometimes which feels unhealthy like letting a part of your life become too big. i’ve been doing that a lot lately.
i went to School Fair (late show again) and then i went to Smerz. i was thinking about how i’ve been listening to Smerz for ten years now, i wanted to sign them at my first music job. back then we had Soundcloud now we have Nina Protocol except now that’s over too before it really began. everything in cycle.
the 2026 Smerz show reminded me of summer. shoulder blades exposed, a polo and mini skirt with pumps. karaoke at winnie’s. they are the Carolyn Bassett Kennedy of music. when the sound engineer stood up and started playing guitar in the center of the room that was crazy. the violins and the microphone cords and singing about big city life - “and now you’re gonna regret / sometimes in your heart / sometimes you try to live a long life.” beautiful people same problems. nyc forever.
i ran into my friend Charlotte after the show in what seems like it’s evolving into the girlie uniform of the (almost) summer. vintage silk slip and baggy Evisu jeans (from the Tangerine sample sale), a pair of Nike ballet flats off Ebay and a bag of lollipops in tow. so many girls dressed this way - effortless and feminine and like walking around the city all day and stopping for a negroni and running into friends and going to a party or taking the long way home over the bridge. you can do anything!!!
i asked Grace for a cigarette and then talked to her friends about how the show was like a pilates class and straight men should not be allowed there. every time i ask a stranger what she’s wearing it’s zara and it’s always this thing where if i walked into zara i could never find a single thing i wanted to buy but it’s like all these girls are a part of some zara private sale where all the good stuff goes. is zara soooo back? honestly it’s giving EuroSummer. the rest of her outfit + Fendi bag was thrifted and her shoes were so electric blue, i love an all neutral look with a colorful shoe. you can also literally wear anything if the shoes are good (and with the camo it was perfect). this is the nyc girl uniform and we’re all living in it <3
i have a week of no shows and i’ve just been walking around my [redacted] neighborhood in my coming of age silk plaid skirt and listening to jeep by kim petras. we can just drive around…..
