gig fits #7
July is over and i’ve been trying to finish this substack post for days and it has not been hitting. i went to work today and listened to the new slayyyter song on the way home from pilates and literally started crying. i love women in music! i’ve been so tired but in the way that my life is feeling both hollow and spilled over the edges at the same time. there’s been just enough shows and i haven’t gone to the beach enough but i’ve been walking around the city feeling both less and more invisible. i am always inventing new ways to be Heartbroken and that’s the beauty of living in new york and working in music! pain, suffering, the new “post Ear” band…. the thrill of everything.
i have only been to the Untitled rooftop since i moved out of Williamsburg and both times the sky has been pure blue and cold enough to need a jacket in the middle of the summer. is this what Coachella feels like? i ran into someone on the street this week who said “I think I saw you there in a sea of 17 year olds” and often i do want to be seventeen again but i have to curb that impulse. post Nina everything is “twee electronica” but Eilish music reminds me of the Francesca Lia Block books i read in my teens where she writes about washing up in the ocean at night / growing wings and being a celestial being in LA neon, being disappointed by it all. you see things so purely and darkly, like living in any city the dimensions of being an adult sometimes smudge away. i used to want to move to LA so bad and now i’m scared of being there even though someone at a show this week said you’re so 1960s Laurel Canyon, or as another guy said “post world war two.”
i asked Maddie (me and Amanda’s star intern) to guest in this one. someone in Ridgewood with Taste <3 of course her shirt is Brandy and she’s doing the capri thing in a way that doesn’t look like a trend and in fact looks effortless like most Girls at Shows always do. the silver hardware pulls it all together: her belt is from L train vintage that she got the first year of college (s/o Fordham) and her Sam Edelman shoes are falling apart. Maddie’s purse was a gift from her bf from Paloma Wool, a reminder that real men do exist…
saturday i met the blonde music industry girls at the East Village pool and fell asleep in the sun. lately my whole life feels like the new Billboard Style song. maybe 2016 is really back and i’m not just regressing. i had the whole weekend off, Emily and i went to Hancock cafe, the M train was running so i could go to girls night. Natalie said “this sounds like the NTS breakfast show” about the [redacted] set. the first hang is always the most perfect.
Aidan was wearing costume bloomers from Depop, and a BCBG top and [unbranded] shoes from Beacon’s closet. her bag is vintage Prada. i literally have been carrying the same bag since 2016 to the point where it doesn’t even feel like a choice anymore but when you become a Girl at the Show and you have to carry your life with you in such a succinct way i think that’s way the purses can always become to focal point of these rundowns. i wish I could wear pointed heels but since I broke my toe two winters ago it’s another point of fear honestly. nonetheless, being girly at Paragon kind of reminds me of being the tannest girl at Warped Tour in 2010. i’m drinking tea at home and then i’m going to walk to the park to see elias ronnenfelt sing. everything hits different this year and that’s beautiful. i’m going to ml buch tomorrow and i was forced to get an iphone 17 and my photos aren’t any better. thank you for listening
